Technical Specification PQ60018QPA60 48 V Input 1.8 V Output 60 A Current 2000 Vdc Isolation Quarter-brick DC/DC Converter The PQ60018QPA60 PowerQorTM Peta Quarter-brick converter is a next-generation, board-mountable, isolated, fixed switching frequency DC/DC converter that uses synchronous rectification to achieve extremely high conversion efficiency. The power dissipated by the converter is so low that a heatsink is not required, which saves cost, weight, height, and application effort. All of the power and control components are mounted to the multi-layer PCB substrate with high-yield surface mount technology. Since the PowerQor converter has no explicit thermal interfaces, it is extremely reliable. The Peta series offers industry leading output currents for any standard quarter-brick module. B 09/24/08 Page 9 Technical Specification BASICOPERATIONANDFEATURES The PowerQor series converter uses a two-stage power conversion topology. The first stage is a buck-converter that keeps the outputvoltageconstantovervariationsinline,load,andtemperature.Thesecondstageusesatransformertoprovidethefunctions of input/output isolation and voltage step-down to achieve the lowoutputvoltagerequired. Boththefirststageandthesecondstageswitchatafixedfrequency forpredictableEMIperformance.Rectificationofthetransformer's outputisaccomplishedwithsynchronousrectifiers.Thesedevices, whichareMOSFETswithaverylowon-stateresistance,dissipate farlessenergythanSchottkydiodes.Thisistheprimaryreasonthat thePowerQorconverterhassuchhighefficiency,evenatverylow outputvoltagesandveryhighoutputcurrents. Dissipation throughout the converter is so low that it does not requireaheatsinkforoperation.Sinceaheatsinkisnotrequired, the PowerQor converter does not need a metal baseplate or potting material to help conduct the dissipated energy to the heatsink.ThePowerQorconvertercanthusbebuiltmoresimply andreliablyusinghighyieldsurfacemounttechniquesonaPCB substrate. The converter then enters a "hiccup mode" where it repeatedly turns on and off at a 5 Hz (nominal) frequency with a 5% duty cycle until the short circuit condition is removed. This prevents excessiveheatingoftheconverterortheloadboard. Output Over-Voltage Limit: If the voltage across the output pins exceeds the Output Over-Voltage Protection threshold, the converterwillimmediatelystopswitching.Thispreventsdamage totheloadcircuitdueto1)excessiveseriesresistanceinoutput currentpathfromconverteroutputpinstosensepoint,2)arelease ofashort-circuitcondition,or3)areleaseofacurrentlimitcondition. Load capacitance determines exactly how high the output voltagewillriseinresponsetotheseconditions.After200msthe converterwillautomaticallyrestart.
