data converters - s m t 8 HMCAD5831LP9BE v00.0312 26 gs/ s 3-bit analog-to-digital converter w/ overrange, inhibit, and 1:2 demux t he a dcs voltage reference ladder comprises 8, 18 ? resistors, or 144 ? total resistance. pin 1, rt f, and pin 15, r bf, are provided for the top and bottom reference taps. t hese pins are driven by external supplies to establish the desired full-scale range of the a dc. t he r f signal input (pin 8, i n ) to the a dc drives an internal emitter follower with a nominal v b e of -900 m v . hence the center of full-scale range should center near -900 m v . t he voltage at pin rt f is then -900 m v + v full-scale /2. likewise the voltage at pin r bf is -900 m v - v full-scale /2. a s an example, if the user had a peak-to-peak input voltage swing of 256 m v and required the full-scale input range of the a dc to be 256 m v as well, rt f would be -900 m v + 128 m v = -772 m v . r bf would be -900 m v - 128 m v = -1.028 v . n ote that the diode drop, -900 m v , is dependent on temperature and process variations. rt f and r bf values in the e lectrical s pecifcations table on pages 1 and 2 are shown as nominal values only. n ote that ladder end voltages, rt f and r bf, are set by the common-mode level of the input, i n . for operation of 10 ghz input and 20 g s /s sample rate, recommended maximum input swing is 0.512 v as set by rt f and r bf. for lower input frequencies, the device will operate with a maximum 1.5 v input swing. t he e lectrical s pecifcations table lists typical operating ranges. reference ladder vref pins pins 26 and 55 ( vre f1 amd vre f2) should be connected together off chip and the pair is then connected to the o g n d through a resistor. t hese pins are used to vary the output swing voltage. t he a pplication circuit shown uses a 200 resistor. t his provides the typical output swings listed in the e lectrical s pecifcations table. increasing the voltage on vre f1 and vre f2 will increase the output swing. conversely, decreasing the vre f1 and vre f2 voltages will decrease the output swing. overrange output pins 28, 29, 31, and 32 provide overrange output bits. t his function indicates when the input signal is out of range of the reference ladder voltages. t he bit will be high when either the signal is above rt f or below r bf. t he overrange bit is cleared for the next clock cycle containing in-range data. data inhibit all data outputs can be forced to 0 by enabling the data inhibit function (pins 61 and 62). by driving the qtp pin high and the qtn pin low, the adc core will produce all 0s. this occurs prior to the xor funciton and the demux. when qtp is low and qtn is high, the chip operates normally. data xor a ll data outputs from the a dc core can be modulated by an external source. t his allows the user to use a c coupling for output line connection to a ser d es input of an fpg a . t his function occurs prior to the demux. t he x or input signal is retimed by the full rate internal clock and requires low jitter and suitable rise and fall times. please contact hittite microwave for sample driver circuits. t ypical modulation frequencies are 100 mhz to 300 mhz. for a square wave signal, a multiple of two divisor of the full rate internal clock should be used, e.g. 1/128th or 1/64th of the a dc clock. due to the nature of the retiming scheme, the demux channel relationship timing can vary. t his is dependent on when the x or input is sampled relative to the full rate internal clock. s ee timing diagrams on page 5. for example, a nominal setup may have demux side x leading and side y trailing. if the x or input is shifted relative to the internal clock, side y may lead and side x may trail. it is highly recommended that a variable delay be used to adjust the phase of the x or input to avoid transitions that are very close to internal clock edges. s ee t ypical o peration e xample for more information. t he x or function can be used with the data inhibit function to produce a sync pattern for aligning the lanes of ser d es inputs. t he device outputs are inverted when x or is low. for price, delivery and to place orders: hittite microwave corporation, 2 elizabeth drive, chelmsford, ma 01824 phone: 978-250-3343 fax: 978-250-3373 order on-line at www.hittite.com application support: phone: 978-250-3343 or apps@hittite.com www.datasheet.net/ datasheet pdf - http://www..co.kr/
data converters - s m t 9 HMCAD5831LP9BE v00.0312 26 gs/ s 3-bit analog-to-digital converter w/ overrange, inhibit, and 1:2 demux evaluation board description eva l01-hmc5831lp9 (131499) demonstrates the hmc a d5831lp9b e in an environment ready to be connected to an fpg a . a long with the a dc, the board features three other hittite microwave components. t he clock output of the a dc is divided down by 64 (two stages of 8, u1, and u2) to produce a clock ouput that is 1/128th of the a dc clock input. t his clock is available to drive the fpg a or other system components. t he a dc x or input has programmable delay (u4) allowing the user to fne-tune the x or clock edges going into the a dc. t he i n hibi t and d8bx inputs are 0 to +3.3 v , compatible with most fpg a s. finally, the a dc_ vr pin allows the user to control the output voltage swing of the a dc. o utput connectors j2 and j3 are high-performance sa m te c connectors, part number er f8-013-05.0-d v . typical operation example a n fpg a with suitably fast ser d es inputs can capture data from the hmc a d5831lp9b e using the following routine. t he fpg a produces an i n hibi t high signal causing the a dc core to produce all 0s. t he x or input to the a dc runs at some slow clock rate and modulates the a dc output to produce a known waveform at the fpg a inputs. t he fpg a then uses these signals to align the lanes. when the lanes are aligned, the inhibit signal goes low and the adc produces signal data that continues to be modulated by the x or input. t he fpg a then corrects for the modulation. n ote that the fpg a can generate the x or modulation signal (in which case a p r b s sequence could be used). depending on the phase of the x or input modulation waveform, either demux output (x or y) can be the leading data sample. in this case, the fpg a would need to resolve which lane is the leader. t his can be accomplished by driving the a dc with a known signal, evaluating the outputs and reassembling fpg a data if necessary. it is recommended to do this on each power up. it is also recommended to perform a routine to ensure that the x or input waveform is properly aligned with the internal clock. t his can be accomplished by sweeping the external variable delay stage. high-temperature operation it is highly recommended that the part be used with a heat sink and fan. performance diminishes as temperature increases. n ominal conditions for part evaluation occurred at an ambient temperature of 25 c. t he evaluation board has a heat sink with an area of 25 cm^2. with this setup, the paddle of the part was measured to be 45 c. when the paddle temperature was raised to 75 c, limited performance was maintained, with an increased clock power level. a t 75 c, performance is guaranteed up to 10 ghz input frequency, 20 g s /s clock rate only. for temperatures above 75 c, device perfor mance is not guaranteed above 20 g s /s. ten-level operation t he hmc a d5831lp9b e can be used as a ten-level (3.32 bits) a dc by combining the regular data outputs with the o verrange bit. t he bottom code (code 0) is equal to ovr high and all the bits low. for codes 1 through 8, the a dc functions normally (with ovr low). t he top code, code 9, is all bits high. n ote that the i n l/d n l plots include ovr in this manner. for price, delivery and to place orders: hittite microwave corporation, 2 elizabeth drive, chelmsford, ma 01824 phone: 978-250-3343 fax: 978-250-3373 order on-line at www.hittite.com application support: phone: 978-250-3343 or apps@hittite.com www.datasheet.net/ datasheet pdf - http://www..co.kr/
